Ah, dear Cindy, YES! Thanks for putting into coherent words what I have been wondering about but not quite getting around to expressing. Another aspect to the jealousy thing, I suspect, is that, as singers, the peak of our art is to MAKE IT LOOK EASY. Instrumental musicians are allowed to frown and emote and look all serious and concentrated when the music is difficult. Our job is to communicate the meaning WITHOUT demonstrating the slightest bit of panic about an upcoming high note or fiendishly difficult phrase. This really doesn't help in the public perception of what we do...
